Wayne DeWitt Brenckman, Jr., MD entered his eternal rest at age 86 on September 12, 2024 at Croasdaile Village, Durham, NC.
Wayne was born December 31st, 1937 in Boston, and spent his childhood years there and subsequently in Forestville, Connecticut. He chose to attend Phillips Andover Academy in Massachusetts, was awarded a scholarship to Rugby School in England, and returned to the United States to graduate from Bristol High School in Connecticut. Wayne then chose to attend Yale University, followed by Yale Medical School. He spent his residency in Minneapolis, Minnesota where he fell in love with flying and went on to receive his private pilot’s license.
He entered the US Navy as a medical officer in 1958, serving primarily in Cuba, where he was attached to a Seabees unit. He excelled in shooting sports, earning both the Navy Expert Pistol and Expert Rifle medals. He later resigned his commission upon attaining the rank of Lieutenant. After his military career, Wayne continued his medical career working for several well-known drug companies based in the Raleigh, NC area. He married the former Margaret R. Godfrey, who has predeceased him, and chose to reside in Durham, where they raised a number of prized English Pointers and Labrador Retrievers. Many residents at Croasdaile Village will recall Wayne traversing the hallways with his very special poodle, Molly Brown.
Wayne leaves behind his sister, Susanna Brenckman Slattberg as well as his niece, Kari Slattberg Thibodeau, his nephews Robert Lee Brenckman, Jr. and his sister Jennifer Brenckman, and Sven Burum Slattberg, and his very dear friends Suzanne Koller and Rich Seader. Wayne was predeceased by his younger brother, Robert Lee Brenckman.
A memorial service is planned for a later date to be held in the Croasdaile Village Chapel, 2600 Croasdaile Farm Parkway, Durham, NC 27705.
