Owen Phillip “Phil” Reid, Jr. was born in Providence, Rhode Island on April 13, 1938. He was the eldest of three children of Catherine Quinn Reid and Owen Phillip Reid, Esq. Phil joined friends and family in heaven on January 15, 2025, at age 86. He was predeceased by his younger sister Eleanor Reid Kelly and is survived by his younger brother John Thomas Reid and John’s wife Susanne, his brother-in-law John Kelly and many nieces and nephews.
Phil graduated from Portsmouth Abbey School in 1955 and from Yale University in 1959 and subsequently joined the United States Navy.
Phil began working for Wells Fargo Bank in San Francisco and remained with the bank for over thirty years. He was an avid tennis player and a longtime member of The Olympic Club of San Francisco where he generously entertained friends and family. As a devoted Red Sox fan, Phil had visited most, if not all of America’s baseball ball parks. Over the years, Phil volunteered his time and administrative abilities with the San Francisco Fire Station Local 798 for their Toys for Tots Program where he meticulously maintained hand-printed records that were then outsourced in later years by the speed of computers, a technology that Phil never embraced. He was seen with his “Firebuff 1” license plate on various cars, which he proudly drove each summer from CA to his native RI stopping along the way to visit the country’s fire stations when not seeing the ball fields. For many years he was President of The Phoenix Society of San Francisco and enjoyed writing for their newsletters.
Phil was genuinely kind and intelligent, a generous individual who elevated those around him with his calm manner and sincere interest in conversation.
Funeral arrangements are through Duggan’s Serra Mortuary, Daly City, California. Acts of kindness towards others can be made in memory of Owen Phillip Reid, Jr.
