Class of 1959 graduate Horace H. Montague (known as Rock during his Yale years and Monty during his career), passed away on December 25, 2025, after a 5-year battle with dementia. A longtime resident of Chatham, N.J., he was 88.
He is survived by his wife Barb (Moore), his daughters Aimee Montague and Andrea Lustig and granddaughter Sarah Lustig. He is also survived by his beloved pup, Breezy, who was his buddy.
Monty was born in Bryn Mawr, Pa., and grew up in Wilmington, Del. He graduated from Wilmington’s Tower Hill School in 1955 and went on to earn a B.E. and B.S. from Yale and a Master’s from Rutgers.
A resident of then-Calhoun, now Grace Hopper College, Rock shared a rambling suite spanning two entries with five roommates with whom he formed lifetime friendships: Ted Calhoun, Vertrees Hollingsworth, Clyde Jones, Paul Killenberg and Robert Laird. Together they formed an entirely unofficial, tongue-in-cheek organization they dubbed the Downtown New Haven Good Times and Happy Fellows.
Monty and Barb, his high school sweetheart, were married in 1962 and went on to share life for 63 years. Wherever they lived, they volunteered in the community. Most recent highlights for Monty were Central NJ Yale Club, Chatham Kiwanis, Chatham Food Bank, Great Swamp Learning Center and 20 years on the Planning Board and Board of Adjustment.
He started his lifelong career with AT&T in 1960 in a job that gave him the opportunity to travel the world. He was proud that he had been to all 50 states.
He was an Eagles fan and a history buff, especially the Civil War. He enjoyed walking in cities to see the diversity of architecture and liked to spend time at a family home in Pennsylvania where he could relax, garden and think of ways to get rid of the resident groundhog.
