Alex Bronaugh Pagel passed away on June 11, 2024 at the age of 86 in his beloved hometown of New York City. Born on December 15, 1937, he attended The Browning School, Deerfield Academy and graduated from Yale University. He was the owner of Pagel & Company, a Brazilian pig iron exporter and shipping company. Beyond business, his wide-ranging interests included opera, classical music, theater and art which he collected on his extensive travels to India, Japan, Haiti and other far-flung destinations. His favorite pastime was painting in the naif style, and his nom de plume was “Le Chienoit Le Cap,” an homage to Haiti. He was a talented chef and host, known for his lavish Christmas buffets. Friends appreciated his humor and knowledgeable conversation and love of a wide variety of writers from Gabriel Garcia Marquez and V.S. Naipal to P.G. Wodehouse. He co-authored a book, “A Birdie for Buddha: A Zen Golfing Guide to Scotland” thus marrying his twin interests in Japanese gardens and golf. The East End of Long Island was home when he was not in Manhattan or traveling. His clubs included the Racquet & Tennis Club, the Union Club, Squadron A, The Metropolitan Opera Club, Doubles, and the Maidstone Club in East Hampton where he enjoyed golfing. Survived by his loving wife Luisa, daughter Allegra, son-in-law Neil Nagraj, and grandchildren Coburn and Clelia, Alex’s legacy is one of love, curiosity and cultural enrichment. A celebration of his life will be held in October 2024.
